The Story Behind the Booking Hero Initiative

How a worldwide search for hospitality champions illuminated the profound human empathy that defines international travel.

Putting People at the Heart of Hospitality

In late 2017, the global hospitality industry witnessed a campaign designed to celebrate something often overlooked in digital travel platforms: the extraordinary human beings who welcome travelers with open doors and empathetic hearts. The #BookingHero initiative invited travelers worldwide to nominate hotel staff, B&B proprietors, and local hosts who went far beyond expected customer service.

Within weeks, more than 12,000 verified traveler stories flooded in across social networks and official portals. These nominations revealed unforgettable moments of selflessness: hosts coordinating medical rescues on remote mountain paths, managers scouring city transit routes for lost family heirlooms, and B&B owners dedicating days to reuniting visitors with long-lost genealogical roots.

The Awards and Recognition

Following exhaustive review by an independent judging panel, the inaugural Booking Hero Grand Prize of €25,000 in travel awards was presented to Karen, owner of Blackburn Villa B&B in Ayr, Scotland. Karen was nominated by Canadian guests David and Virginia, whom she helped locate the exact birthplace of David's late father after days of painstaking archival research.

Runners-up honors and €5,000 recognition awards were presented to Alina from citizenM Hotel in New York City (who rescued a stranded Belgian bride on her wedding day) and Sudarshi from Tunnel Gap Homestay in Ella, Sri Lanka (who lovingly tended a Dutch guest through a fractured ankle while awaiting the arrival of her own child).

Our Archival Mission

This website serves as an independent historical tribute archive celebrating the spirit of the Booking Hero campaign. While booking technologies continue to evolve, the fundamental value of hospitality remains unchanged: warmth, empathy, and personal responsibility towards the traveler.

By documenting these stories and preserving campaign history, we celebrate the frontline workers across all continents who make every journey feel like home.
